Place of event: Recife and Noronha
The International Regatta Recife - Fernando de Noronha (REFENO) attracts national and international competitors every year. The sea, the wind and the climate of Pernambuco are ideal for sailing and the landscapes are one of the highlights. The boats leave Marco Zero in Recife and sail to Fernando de Noronha. The sail between Recife and Fernando de Noronha is a sailor's dream. The first amateur competition was held in 1984 and the five-member crew of the boat Odisseus won the race.
The REFENO is Brazil's first ocean regatta and in its eighteen years it has grown so significantly that today it is necessary to limit the number of participants. In 2004, REFENO broke a record: 146 enrolled boats in the regatta.
There are various award categories besides first prize, including 2nd and 3rd prizes, the first foreigner to cross the line, the oldest and youngest finishers, and the first woman to complete the course. The next-to-last to finish takes the TAMAR Trophy: Sea Turtle.
